Eclipse in Safari Kenya,
In November 3, 2013, a total solar
eclipse will pass over equatorial Gabon in Western Africa
congo, Uganda, Kenya and finally Ethiopia. Lodwar in Kenya
reports a very encouraging “percent of possible sunshine”
of 74 percent, strong confirmation of a pronounced decline
in cloudiness toward the eastern end of the eclipse track,
though the value is so high as to invite a little
suspicion which results to a very high resolution which
makes it the best point to be during this time of event
and as the duration of the eclipse declines to less than
20 seconds across Kenya and to less than 10 seconds in
Ethiopia. For the experienced eclipse chaser in these
locations, such a narrow and abrupt eclipse will come with
a prominent presentation of the colorful innermost
atmospheric layer of the Sun (the chromospheres) and a
spectacular view along the axis of the Moon’s shadow.
Satellite and surface measurements indicate that the weather prospect in northern Kenya is the best along the entire 2013 eclipse track. Standing in these untouched landscapes – gazing up at the unreal fuchsia hues of the solar prominences, the swirling wisps of corona around the black disk of the Moon – promises to be an experience you’ll carry with you forever.
Witness a 14 or 22-second sunset total eclipse of the Sun by the shore of a remote Kenyan lake in a desert landscape.

the shores of the alkaline lake popularly known as Lake
Rudolf – the only water source in the region – the terrain
is a mix of dry, semi-desert bush and near-desert open
country. The park was established partly through the
initiative of the National Museums of Kenya to protect
unique paleontological and archaeological sites, some of
which are linked to the origins of humans. Fossil finds in
the area include crocodiles (euthecodon brumpti), giant
tortoises (pelusios broadleyi), elephants (elephas recki)
and a petrified forest.
At the Sibiloi landing strip beside Lake Turkana, we establish our basic camp near the viewing site prior to the eclipse the following day assisted by our staff, you set up your own tent and other camping equipment (all provided) for an overnight stay. We’re traveling with our own food and water which will be send before we arrive by our crews, so meals will be ample but basic. The hybrid total solar
eclipse in Kenya
With totality occurring a mere 12° above shimmering Lake Turkana, this eclipse promises to different from any you’ve encountered before. As the Sun, Moon, and Earth join in a grand conjunction, a remarkably concentrated lunar shadow – barely 13 km (8 mi) wide – sweeps toward us over the barren landscape at an extraordinary 14,000 km/h (8,800 mph).
The diamond ring flares, the Sun vanishes behind the lunar disk, and we experience 11.5 seconds (limb corrected) within this narrow cone of darkness. Through binoculars or a telescope, you can see the black disk of the Moon encircled by a ruby-red ring of light (the chromosphere) and, hanging above it, flame-like prominences extending into the pearly white solar corona. The twilight glow on the horizon is incredibly bright, with the lunar shadow’s edge a mere 6.4 km (4 mi) away.
As totality ends, the second diamond ring flares, the sky brightens, the Sun returns, and the Moon’s shadow rushes off to the east. And then, just prior to the onset of fourth contact, the partially eclipsed Sun sets over Turkana’s western shore. At our celebratory dinner, conversation naturally revolves around the elements that make this eclipse so special: the enveloping chromospheres, the bright 360° horizon sunset and the narrow shadow cone approaching and receding at an incredible speed across the wilds of northern Kenya.
After totality and a sunset partial eclipse enjoy a celebratory camp dinner followed by an evening of stargazing in some of the darkest skies on Earth
Day 11: Sibiloi National Park – Nairobi. 4th November
At first light we break down our camp and fly back to Nairobi, enjoying spectacular aerial views along the way. We will reach our comfortable hotel after two hours of flight, relax and enjoy lunch followed by an afternoon farewell dinner at the carnivore restaurant. After which you will be transferred to the air port for your onward flight back home.
